Things to Know Before Applying for an AU Credit Card

  • It is important to evaluate the annual membership fees, reward points and cashback offers to select the best card matching your lifestyle.
  • Go through the Credit Card MITC or Key Fact Statement for details of applicable fees and charges.
  • Pay your bills on time to help maintain a good credit score and prevent late fees.
  • Using more than 30% of your credit limit can negatively affect your credit score.

Types of Credit Cards

  • Standard Credit Cards:

Standard credit cards are commonly accepted and offer a credit limit for purchases. They may impose annual fees and interest, but they can provide benefits such as special offers from merchants.

  • Rewards Credit Cards:

Rewards credit cards allow you to earn cashback, points, or miles on your purchases. Ideal if you pay off your entire balance every month.

  • Travel Credit Cards:

Travel credit cards provide frequent travellers with airline miles, hotel points, and privileges like access to airport lounges.

  • Cashback Credit Cards:

Cashback credit cards offer cashback on purchases, typically with higher rewards for specialized categories such as groceries or restaurants.

  • Secured Credit Cards:

Secured Credit Cards require a Fixed Deposit (FD) with the bank. The credit limit is typically 80% of the FD amount. It is ideal for those who are new to credit or want to rebuild their credit history.

  • Business Credit Cards:

Business credit cards offer benefits geared to specific business needs, such as office supplies or travel.

Credit Card Dos and Don'ts

Dos:

  • Pay on time: Ensure timely payments to avoid late fees and maintain a good credit score.
  • Monitor your statements: Regularly check your statements for any unauthorized transactions or errors.
  • Use rewards wisely: Take advantage of cashback, points, and other rewards by using your card for planned purchases.
  • Keep utilization low: Aim to use less than 30% of your credit limit to maintain a healthy credit score.
  • Know your credit limit: Be aware of your credit limit to avoid over-limit fees and potential damage to your credit score.
  • Report lost/stolen cards immediately: Contact your bank immediately if your card is lost or stolen to prevent unauthorized usage.

Don'ts:

  • Miss payments: Avoid missing payments as it can lead to high-interest charges and damage your credit score.
  • Max out your card: Refrain from using your entire credit limit; high utilization can negatively affect your credit score.
  • Ignore terms and conditions: Understand the terms, including interest rates and fees, to avoid unexpected charges.
  • Take cash advances: Avoid cash advances due to high fees and interest rates.
  • Apply for multiple cards simultaneously: Multiple applications can lower your credit score and signal financial instability.
  • Share your card details: Keep your credit card information private to prevent fraud and unauthorized charges.
