We are all part of our communities and societies that contribute to who we are and what we can achieve. Hence, it’s essential that we give it back to them in whatever way we can.
Giving back to society not only makes us more generous, but it also gives us a sense of purpose and happiness in doing something for others who need it more. Such activities offer a sense of fulfillment that’s rarely found elsewhere. Moreover, it is an opportunity for you to grow as a person, to better understand how you fit into the world around you.
So how can you help the society? If you are one of those who is thinking where to start, what to do, and who to work with – have a read below. Here in this section, we have listed five ways you can give back to your society, even if you want to start today!
Making donations to organizations you believe in is one of the many excellent ways to give back to the society.
You can donate money, gently-used clothing, food, or anything that someone may find useful. Donations may be things that you previously owned or that you purchased new for a person or organization that you want to support.
But whatever stuff you choose to donate, whether it is toys, books, clothes, home supplies, etc ensure it’s your best stuff, it's clean and not broken. Moreover, ensure it’s appropriate for the time of year (charity centers/organizations wouldn’t need Christmas/Diwali decorations in January/February, or woolen clothes in summer). For better options, you can call before you drop off to check what stuff they actually need right now.
Note: Apart from charity centers there are many local places to drop things off (e.g. homeless shelters, refugee camps, community projects, schools/playgroups, etc). Choose one that you feel helps serve the community better.
A food bank is a non-profit, charitable organization that distributes food to those who have difficulty purchasing enough to avoid hunger. Some food banks operate on the "front line" model, giving out food directly to the hungry, while others operate on the "warehouse" model, supplying food to intermediaries like food pantries, kitchens, and other front-line organizations. But, one thing all food banks have in common is that they rely on donors and volunteers to carry out their day-to-day operations. So choose one such center around your locality, where you can offer your support.
Think about your individual time and talent. You can donate it based on the needs of the organization or the person to whom you are volunteering.
You can offer your teaching skills, writing skills, or any other creative skills that can come in handy to a person or an organization. And no matter what you’re doing, whatever time/talent you give to others, it will always be very appreciated.
Planting a tree can be the simplest and easiest deed you can do to give back to the community.
Trees provide so many benefits to our everyday lives. They filter clean air, provide fresh drinking water, help curb climate change, and create homes for thousands of species of plants and animals. With this activity you'll do more than put a seed in the ground - it will not only help restore the land affected by humans and natural disasters but will also keep the environment safe and healthy for the future generation.
This can be on a large or small scale! You can organize a food drive/fund drive and donate the proceeds in honor of a charity of your choice. Doing so will not only help you raise funds or goods but will also raise awareness about the cause and pave the foundation for other forms of fundraising and engagement. Moreover, it will familiarize you with your community, and connect you to people and ideas that will positively impact your perspective for the rest of your life.
All the above activities are simple and easy to do. You can try them out - as per your time and convenience. Remember - even a small gesture can have a big impact. Whatever you do for your society, will be appreciated and every act of kindness is another chance to make someone’s day.
